Years ago I asked myself if I was able to learn to play the electric guitar with no experience at all. I assumed there was no difference between playing an electric guitar, an acoustic guitar or a classical guitar. As long as it was a guitar of some sort everything would be ok. I bought an acoustic guitar and attempted to learn to play the guitar but I found the strings so big and tough that the ends of my fingers would swell up in blisters in a day, so I gave up playing and assumed I was useless. About 6 months later, I bought a classical guitar because the nylon strings were easier on my fingers, bur I couldn't bend strings on it and it definitely was not the rock'n'roll sound I was looking for. I was told that if I wanted to learn to play the electric guitar, it would be better to begin on an acoustic guitar and then progress to an electric guitar.
I finally got the correct advice from a notorious guitar teacher in London by the name of John Mizarolli. He told me that after teaching 25000 guitarists or so that it was obvious that the 60's opinion that an acoustic guitar was a good starting point was wrong. Many burned out hippy-dippy type 60's guys adhered to the illusion that an acoustic guitar was more "organic" than an electric, and therefore a natural place to start on your guitar playing journey. The truth is most of John's guitar students with zero experience who started totally from scratch on an acoustic didn't get very far or simply gave up - obviously very dissapointed with the result. This is simply because your fingers can't take the weight and thickness of acoustic strings and you don't have enough stamina in the tendons and muscles of your fingers. Moreover, the end of your fingers are so delicate that playing becomes is akin to grating cheese, only the cheese is your fingers!
John advised me to buy an Electric Guitar Starter Pack from the Internet for about £80 to £120. You get a Small Amp, a Guitar Tuner, a Guitar Strap, Guitar Picks, Guitar Strings, a Guitar Lead and obviously an Electric Guitar all in the deal. The strings are much thinner and more bearable to learn to play the electric guitar. The only other option is to put really thin or electric strings on an acoustic guitar, but this is not a good sound. I now play electric, acoustic and classical. My break in point to playing the guitar was a cheap electric.
I love the electric guitar because it has power, energy and the sound is cool even without amplification. I bought an expensive electric guitar last month. I'm now writing songs and I reflect on the day that I started to learn to play the electric guitar. I am an overly sensitive person and I need music to balance my emotions and I find guitar playing great therapy. Today I finally decided to learn to play the electric guitar under the guidance of a professional teacher. So money and pride aside, I've booked in lessons with John to see what a pro can do for my ability and musicianship. My girlfriend loves hard rock so me playing distorted electric guitar sounds will be ok. I'm not Iron Maiden level yet, but I want to learn to play the electric guitar to the max of my potential.
